Rodney Foster

In the past three decades, the golfing achievements of individual Club members have largely been dominated by Rodney Foster. The Club is proud to have as a member a man  whose name is known throughout the world of amateur golf and who has been not only one of the county’s greatest amateur players but one of the finest ambassadors of the game all over the world .

Rodney was brought up in a golfing family. His mother and father were both members of The Bradford Golf Club, his father having been Captain of the Club in 1956. His brother George was a scratch golfer and obtained a golfing blue at Oxford and played for the Yorkshire team in the 1950’s.

Rodney first hit a golf ball at the age of 7, but did not start playing serious golf until the ripe old age of 10. He achieved his first of eight holes-in-one at the 12th hole at The Bradford at the age of 13. Other memorable ‘aces’ included one whilst breaking the course record at Royal  Lytham and winning the Lytham Trophy on the first of  two occasion s in 1967 and 1968. Another was the 14th at  Moortown when beating Roger Mitchell in the final of the Yorkshire Amateur Championship  in 1967.
His golfing prowess has earned him honorary membership at The Bradford, Keighley, East Bierley, Shipley. llkley, West Bowling, Halifax, Woodsome Hall and Killarney Golf Clubs.

During his career he has held course records at Royal Lytham, Royal Troon, Prestbury, Leeds and The Bradford, of which Royal Lytham (66) and Prestbury (66) still stand today. Although Rodney is known as a superb golfer, not everyone will appreciate just how much he has achieved during his golfing career. His remarkable record is listed below:

“4* – I don’t get out on the greens enough but when I do I normally go for courses nearby in Roundhay and Wike. However from working with Bradford Golf Club I had to try out the course and it’s (a) not a bad drive from North Leeds side and (b) a *superb* golf course. Really welcoming and professional – what you’re looking for in a golf club”

Duncan Coleman

“5* – Ive been following Herbert Fowler golf courses & looking to play as many as I can when work permits. Bradford Golf Club does not disappoint. Whilst there are a lot of trees, they are redeveloping the course and taking it back to its roots & are in the middle of major tree removal. The contours of the land are coming back through & you can definitely see the Fowler influence”

Ken Thorpe

“5* – Lovely surroundings and great for social events”

Caron Andrade

“5* – Quite possibly the best golf club in the area. All staff are friendly and welcoming. Banter is included if you’re a southerner. The course has never been a reason to complain on any of the many occasions I’ve played it. I urge any keen golfer to play this course – you will NOT be unimpressed by it.”

Mark Adi Wardle

“5* – Fantastic golf course. Every hole is different. Greens are also top drawer. Well worth a visit.”

Robert Harrison

“5* – Played in the Seniors open, well organised, excellent course and friendly staff. Looking forward to playing again next week with the Wike Ridge Golf Society. Certainly one of the best courses in the area.”
