  • The Hawksworth Trophy 2011

The prestigious Hawksworth Trophy, a 36-hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers throughout the north of England, was held at The Bradford Golf Club on Saturday 30th April.

This year's event was won by Adrian Lounton, playing out of Pike Hills Golf Club, with a two-round gross score of 143, 1 over par, on a day when the playing condtions were far from condusive for low scoring. In fact, both the first and second rounds had competition scratch scores of 74, 3 over par.

In a very close competition, where the weather conditions could throw up many different scores, Adrian finished one shot ahead of Ashley Simpson from Fulford and two ahead of Andy Shaw on 148 of Huddersfield Golf Club who finished in third place. All of the top three were at the prize presentation to collect their prizes and each had nothing but priase for the way that the day was organised and run and for the excellent condition of the course, especially so early in the season.

The four Bradford Club entrants were led home by Chris Dunn on 148.

The Hawksworth Trophy is one of the major competitions throughout the season which, together, constitute on event on the Yorkshire Order of Merit. It attracts a top class field and has been a prominent feature in The Bradford Golf Club calendar for 40 years. This year the competition saw the Yorkshire Union President, Mr. David Smith and the Bradford Union President, Mr. Howard Thorpe in attendance along with a good number of spectators.

A highlight of the day came from Mr. Louis Tomlinson (Haydock Park) who had a hole-in-one at the par 3 12th in his afternoon round. A beautifully struck wedge landed just 6 feet short of the pin, checked on the first bounce and majestically rolled into the hole from about 2 foot. Louis explained afterweards that it was his fourth hole in one, having had his first when he was just five!!!!

The Club Head Professional Andrew Hall says "The Hawksworth Trophy proved once again to be a challenging competition for the region's top players and we very much look forward to hosting the event again in 2012"
